BEFORE

We engaged Ian to do an inglenook restoration in out 16C house, a complex job that involved removing an old fireplace and internal chimney breast reducer, stone register plate and block fascia.  We had a few quotes from various specialists we didn't really know what the job would involve, and those builders were reluctant to proceed, however, Ian was immediately able to tell us what to expect.  He has a deep understanding of historical buildings and their construction and structure, and he is knowledgeable and passionate about all aspects of conservation.  He was able to explain what we needed to do, and provide details of what surprises we may encounter and how we should deal with them.  Ian quoted us a price range and the final bill came within that range.  He also helped us with the application for Listed Building Consent, giving me enough information to do the application myself, whilst he provided the method statement.  Once the job started, we did indeed find some surprises, but they were swiftly dealt with and work was completed within the timescale and budget, and to an incredibly high standard.  The extra brickwork that we needed doing was done by Ian and was such a beautiful bit of brickwork we left it exposed and made it a feature, rather than lime plaster over it.  He also supplied, cut and laid a York stone hearth which was also a fantastic feature.  Always prompt, a very tidy worker, and we were over the moon with the end result.  We wouldn't hesitate to use Ian for any future work.

KENT COWL REBUILD

Dear Ian

Thanks so much for the truly excellent work on our chimney. We had no idea where to even start with repair work, so your expertise and advice, as well as outstanding craftsman, were very much appreciated. Thank you for taking into account the historic nature of our house and working to make the best of it.

Kind regards
Rebecca, nr Edenbridge, Kent

Large Scale Traditional Repointing

The outer chimney face to my inglenook fireplace which dated back to 14 century was in a poor state, water was leaking through, whereby the mortar was crumbling and it was in need of repair.

Ian Hampson came and assessed the work that was needed to be done.

He was extremely professional and his communication was very good in letting me know when the work was to be carried out.

He rendered the strip between the wall and the tile hung face as well as repointing the  complete chimney face using lime in the mortar to give a stronger mix and would have been used when it was originally built.

I have been really pleased with the end result and I received many compliments from passers by who saw him working on it.

I would highly recommend his work.
