We were recently in Kent, repairing a chimney consisting of 4 flues. The chimney sections are built back to back but were not tied in from the top to bottom including the mid feathers.
Concerning indeed. Who said that they knew how to build better in past times!
The Chimney Head was incorrectly constructed
Due to the incorrect construction, it allowed water to run down the face with the inevitable results of spalling and failure of the brickwork of the vertical face.
To restore the Chimneys effectively I used helifix bars and resin to tie the lower areas together.
The head was then re-built using specific imperial size bricks which brought all the elements of the chimney together for correct function and in keeping with the building's age and design.
It was then repointed with the correct traditional lime mortar mix and finished with a brushed back joint.
The Chimney was fitted with new pots and terminals which were then appropriately aged completing this major repair project.
